Diy Portable Sawhorse for Forest School

Sawhorses are incredibly useful pieces of equipment for the woodland leader. They allow us to teach safe saw techniques to a variety of ages at a comfortable height. The posts keep hands separated from saw teeth and they can be moved wherever they are needed. With just a few simple tools and some scrap wood, you can easily make a safe and stable workstation for your Forest School setting.

Tools you will need

  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Straight edge
  • Saw
  • Drill (hand or electric)
  • Wood drill bits (one smaller than the diameter of your screws and the other the same size as your bolts)
  • Screwdriver or impact driver
  • Spanners/wrenches for the bolts

Resources needed

  • 6 pieces of lumber for the legs – I went with 1×2″ or 22x47mm but 2×2″ or 50x50mm would work as well. Depending on how tall you want the legs I would recommend cutting each piece to between 80 and 100cm.
  • 2 Planks for the bottom bracing – I went with 1×4″ or 25x100mm cut to 80cm lengths.
  • 2 pieces of lumber for the top bracing – I went with more 1×2″ lumber (anything relatively thin would work), cut to 80cm lengths.
  • 3 Bolts – I used M10 60mm bolts
  • 18 wood screws – long enough to go through your bracing and halfway into the legs.
  • A length of rope – if you have blue nylon play rope lying around this is a good way to get rid of it.

I hope this has been useful to you and happy sawing!
