Knives and tools day for Forest school Leaders

Build confidence in tool skills

When I completed my Forest School Level 3 qualification I felt like I had been given a good overview of skills I should have as a leader, however, I didn’t feel quite as ready to teach this to other people. There had not nearly been enough hours of guided instruction on tools use to take me from a beginner to an instructor. For a long time afterwards I was painfully aware of my own lack of skills and this made it harder to teach others with confidence.

It is only after a lot of practice, experimentation and trial and error that I eventually managed to build a system for balancing achievement and safety. As leaders we walk a fine line between helping our participants to take beneficial risks and providing a safe environment.

This course is designed to help you bridge that gap and provide tool-based activities that challenge and inspire while managing the risks confidently.

Things we will cover:

  • Risk management principles
  • Choosing and maintaining the right tools for the job
  • Techniques and practices for using a range of carving, splitting, sawing and drilling tools.
  • Tool-based project ideas that you can take back to your own sessions..
